Conviction and Obedience: A Message from Pastor Sarah Cunningham

Have you ever known exactly what God wanted you to do but didn't move? Not because you didn't love Him. Not because you didn't believe in Him. But something in you resisted. That is what I want to talk about today at Passionate Life Church. That space between what God reveals and what we actually do about it. How we take conviction and turn it into action.

I want you to imagine a Venn diagram. Two circles. Conviction in one. Obedience in the other. And then there is that space in the middle where the two circles overlap. That is the gap. That is where we come into alignment, and as a counselor, I love that word. Alignment. Alignment with God's purpose, God's calling on your life, forgiveness, and stepping into belief. That is what we are navigating today.

Before we get into it, let me pray.
Heavenly Father, I thank you for this space. I thank you for giving me the opportunity to be your vessel. I pray that all the words come through you, that it is the Holy Spirit that fills this room, and that people just receive your message, Lord, and know how much they are loved by you and know the good and perfect will that you have for their life. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Conviction Is Not Condemnation
The first thing I need you to hear is this: conviction is not condemnation. It is not. Conviction is the loving correction of the Holy Spirit. It is where the Holy Spirit reveals truth and calls you higher. There is something He puts on your heart, something that rises up and you do not even know where it came from. Why do I suddenly have this urge to call my brother? Why do I feel like I need to go serve in the cafe at Passionate Life Church? That is not random. That is not your personality playing tricks on you. That is God, who created you and knows everything about you, putting something on your heart because He has a plan for it.

We anchor this in John 16:13-15. When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own, but will tell you what He has heard. That spirit, that ping, that gut feeling, that thing that rises up in you wherever you make decisions from, some of us are emotional decision makers, some of us go by gut, that is the Holy Spirit. That is direct from God, saying I really need you to do something about this.

And then Hebrews 4:12 tells us that the word of God is alive and powerful, sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow, exposing our innermost thoughts and desires. That conviction cuts. It gets you, and you feel it. You know something is there. You know where God is trying to lead you.

But here is what happens. We feel it, we justify it, and then we delay it. We tell ourselves now is not the right time. I am too busy. I already have too much on my plate. And while we are justifying and delaying, I want you to ask yourself this question: Who needs you to show up, and who is missing out on the blessing because you are not answering the call?
Conviction is when truth interrupts your current pattern. And that is painful because we have our week planned out. We have our schedule. We have our calendar. And then this interruption comes, and you think, "You want me to do what? But that is where God is saying please stop resisting me. I see you. I love you. I need you.

Conviction brings awareness. It is an alignment check and an invitation for transformation. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. I say that all the time because conviction is God saying that is not who you are anymore. I am here to show you who you actually are. God does not convict you to shame you. He is revealing his identity. He is reminding you of who you are, because we have often forgotten. We let the world decide. We let our friend groups decide. And there is a Holy Spirit conviction about that, too. They always say you are the sum of the five people you surround yourself with. Who are you surrounding yourself with? Are they anchoring you to an identity that does not belong to you?

This is where we get stuck. Conviction feels uncomfortable. When the pattern is interrupted, we feel it. We justify it. We delay it. We think we have all the time in the world. But I want to share something that Pastor Andrew has done in services before. He takes this long rope and wraps a small section of it in black electrical tape. That little taped section is your time here on earth. All the rest of the rope is eternity. That is what we are shooting for. So when we delay obedience, we are acting like we have all the rope in the world. We do not.

Here is one of the most exciting things I discovered while studying for this message. Conviction is often the answer to the prayer you have already been praying. We pray for peace and we imagine peace is going to look like this calm, uninterrupted feeling. We pray for patience and we expect to just stop getting frustrated. But what often happens is God answers your prayer for peace by convicting you to call your brother and apologize. That is the peace. That is the answer. But we sit there and list every reason why he was wrong and miss it entirely.

I have a mantra that I have carried since I came out of rehab. Name it, claim it, let it go. What was my role? What do I need to take accountability for and repent? And what do I give to God so I can have that peace? That is conviction working the way it is supposed to work.

Conviction reveals truth. But conviction alone does not change your life. It changes your life when you act. It changes the lives of others when you stop putting it off. He is not shaming you. He is not trying to make you feel guilty. He is trying to show you all that you are and all that He has for everybody else through you.

Obedience: The Active Response to God's Voice
So then we get to obedience. That word in itself can feel heavy. But here is what obedience actually is: the active response to God's voice, even when it costs you comfort, control, and clarity.

I want to walk through the perfect example of conviction moving into obedience. We are going to go to Luke 5:1-11, and I want to break it down, because this is not just a story about fishing.

One day, Jesus was preaching on the shore of the Sea of Galilee, and great crowds pressed in around Him. He noticed two empty boats at the water's edge. The fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. Jesus stepped into one of the boats, Simon's boat, and asked him to push out a little from shore so He could teach the crowds. And Simon did it. Then when Jesus finished speaking, He told Simon to go out into the deep water and let down the nets for a catch.

Here is the first thing I want you to see. Jesus stepped into Peter's boat before He asked Peter for anything. He came to Peter's environment. He came to where Peter was. And that tells us something critical about how God operates. He will step into your situation before He asks you for transformation. He will come alongside you. He will come into your home, your workplace, your heart, before He asks you to do anything. He meets you where you are first.

Then He asks Peter to do something that completely contradicts Peter's experience. Peter is a professional fisherman. He has been on that water all night. He knows those waters. He caught nothing. And now Jesus, a carpenter, is telling him to go back out and try again. That is a conviction challenging what you think you already know. I already tried that. I already attempted to apologize, and they did not receive it. Conviction says do it again. We do not give up.

Peter's response is so honest: Master, we worked hard all last night and didn't catch a thing. That is the justification. That is the delay. Logic says no. Experience says no. Exhaustion says no.

But then something changes. Peter says, yet because you said so, I will let down the nets. Isn't that something? Not a full understanding. Not full confidence. Not a guaranteed outcome. Just because you said so, I will do it. That is obedience. And as a parent, as someone who has been on the receiving end of a child finally saying okay because you said so, I can tell you that is exactly what God is waiting to hear from us.

The nets filled so completely they began to tear. Both boats were so full of fish that they were nearly sinking. And the breakthrough did not happen at conviction. It happened after obedience. It happened when Peter stepped into it.

Then Simon Peter falls to his knees and says, go away from me, Lord, I am a sinful man. And I want to be very clear here because this is important: that is not shame. That is what happens when you suddenly realize you are standing in the presence of holiness. That is awe. That is the recognition of the gap between what we are and what God is. And into that moment of unworthiness, Jesus speaks identity. Do not be afraid. From now on, you will fish for people.

Conviction revealed who Peter was. Obedience is what allowed Jesus to reassign it. Peter did not just catch fish that day. He discovered who he was. And that is what is waiting for you. It does not matter how old you are, how long you have been doing something, or how young you are, and how unclear the path still feels. There is a guide showing you the whole way. We just have to listen and then act.

When Delayed Obedience Becomes Disobedience
I need to say something that is hard but true. Delayed obedience is disobedience. It is. And I say that not to shame anyone, because I have lived on both sides of this, but because it matters.

In counseling, we like to call it processing. I process a lot. I need my quiet space to think things through. But at some point, the processing becomes an excuse. God is not going to give you more confirmation when what you actually need is courage. He is sitting right there, saying I have already told you. What else do you need to know? It is time.

We give ourselves permission to delay because we think we have all the time in the world. We make time for everything we want to do. We can make time for what God is asking too. And one of the biggest enemies of that right now, and I did not even have this in my notes, it just came to me while I was up here, is our phones. Every time that quiet moment comes, the moment where conviction would have the clearest space, we reach for the phone. We check the likes, the messages, the notifications. And the whole time God is right there waiting like a parent whose child is in the same room but completely absorbed in something else.

That still small voice will not compete with your screen. But it will keep showing up. Because He does not want to wrestle it away from you anymore. He is telling you what needs to change and asking you to step into what actually changes it.

Obedience Is Where Transformation Happens
I cannot preach this message in the abstract because I have lived it. I was on staff here at Passionate Life Church as a paid director. I was the director of life groups and early childhood. I had stability. I had a paycheck. I was serving God and getting paid. And then God said, " You are done.

During a Journey to the Cross experience, He revealed that He wanted me to step down to a volunteer role and open my counseling and coaching practice. God named it Seek Truth. He is the CEO. And what that meant practically was giving up the stability and the paycheck and trusting Him with the rest.

I have never been happier. And yes, I am also more scared at times because I do not always know what is coming next. But I trust anyway. Because I am aligned. And here is what I have noticed about alignment. When you are walking in the identity God has assigned you, people are drawn to what is coming through you. They sense it even when they cannot name it. That is the power of obedience made visible. That is what happens when you stop resisting and start walking.

Conviction will tell you what needs to change. Obedience is what actually changes it. He is stirring something in you. And there are certainly people reading this right now who know exactly what God has been asking you to do. You do not need more confirmation. You need courage. Because on the other side of obedience is the life that God has already shown you. That dream. That vision. That version of yourself that He has been patiently waiting for you to step into.

What is He asking of you? Who do you need to call? Who do you need to apologize to? Where do you need to put down your idea of His plan and just step into what His plan actually is?

Be the light. He is using you every single day. A hello, a smile, a check-in, a hug. Follow that still small voice because you are going to be the Jesus that somebody needs to see. Stand confident in that because you are fearfully and wonderfully made exactly as you are. The only thing that needs to change is that you start listening and then you start stepping.

You Don't Need More Confirmation. You Need Courage.
